If you're writing the same number of bits per second, this means each bit takes up a larger amount of magnetic media at the outer edge compared to the inner edge. This means that towards the outer edge of the disk more magnetic media is passing under the head per second than towards the inner edge of the disk (with a larger circumference, a constant angle will represent a longer chunk of media). Slide the write-protect tab "up" (away from the disk's slide cover) so that you can see through the hole.Context, since it's not spelled out with a lot of background in the article: most floppy drives spin at a fixed RPM, which is referred to as a Constant Angular Velocity (CAV: ie, no matter how far out on the disk you are, the disk rotates by a constant angle per second). If you encounter a disk like this, it may be necessary to cut back or remove part of the barcode label. NOTE: collecting unit staff have sometimes placed barcode labels on top of the disk shutter so that it cannot slide over and enter the drive properly. For Mac-formatted 400K or 800K floppies, you will need to use the BDPL's Macintosh Power 6500 (procedures TBD). The BDPL has a Sabrent USB 3.5" floppy disk drive that will handle most floppies. Never open or remove the protective "door" or shutter on a 3.5" floppy. These are easily damaged by dust or fingerprints. If mold is detected on a floppy disk, we will need to contact the collecting unit to determine appropriate steps to clean the disks. Not only can humidity ruin a floppy disk, but mold can as well.
